What is DEI/DIB?
“Diversity is having a seat at the table, inclusion is having a voice, and belonging is having that voice be heard.” These are the inspiring words of author Liz Fosslien. Diversity, in simple terms, is the various means that differentiate groups of people from one another. Equity is the effort for justice within systems, procedures, or institutions. And lastly, inclusion is the act of creating a welcoming environment for individuals of all backgrounds which contributes to a sense of belonging. In a workplace where executive decisions are being made and information is being shared, DIB comes into play as the belonging part ensures that everyone has a seat at the table and ensures that their opinions and requests are taken into account. In learning and social environments, the equity part comes into play as it ensures that in programs or processes, everyone experiences an equal opportunity to participate and earn an outcome through the event.
